Engineer at Intel, Francois Piednoel tweeted on his Twitter account a small survey asking his followers whether they would buy a 12-core Extreme Edition i7 processor.
He mentions that these CPUs would be unlocked, i.e. have unlocked multiplier that would allow easy overclocking, and that they would be positioned at the same price points as 12-core Xeon server processors. It does seem like steep step to go, coming from 6 cores straight to 12 cores, at least in consumer market. Nevertheless, these processors would surely be of interest to most extreme enthusiasts. Ivy Bridge-EP IPC performance, 12-cores and 24-threads coupled with massive overclocks would provide record-breaking performance, that's one thing for sure.
