The Verdict

The Good:
High and consistent performance
No overprovisioning

The Bad
Plain bundle and packaging
SSD of this class should get 5 year warranty

Surprisingly, Transcend SSD740 256GB showed real world performance comparable to OCZ Vector 256GB. In some tests it was slower and in others faster, but overall performance was very consistent, which shows that SSD740 can equally deal with both compressible and incompressible data, as well as have balanced read and write performance. We did see a hiccup in OS booting test where SSD740 fell a few seconds behind the pack. Other than that, it showed consistent and competitive performance.

Compared to other high end class SSDs, SSD740 lacks 5 year warranty. Instead it gets a standard 3 year warranty. That could be a deal breaker for some. It also has very simple bundle consisting of just four screws. Competitors usually include some sort of disk backup software, 3.5" adapter and/or other accessories.

That said, due to shorter warranty and plain bundle, Transcend SSD740 256GB should be cheaper than its competitors such as OCZ Vector 256GB, Plextor M5 Pro 256GB or Samsung 840 Pro 256GB. If you can find it cheaper than its competitors, Transcend SSD740 256GB is a good and recommended deal. Otherwise we'd pick aforementioned SSDs from OCZ, Plextor or Samsung simply due to longer warranty.
